ADRIANA C. MARES
story

from méxico to texas
My name is Adriana Mares. I am a student in the public health and biomedical program at The University of Texas at El Paso supported by the Terry Foundation. I was born in United States, but moved to Ciudad Juárez, Mexico when I was young. In 2007, my family and I moved to El Paso, Texas where I became heavily involved with the hospital's volunteering programs and school’s Science Fair. My commitment to these programs along with personal experiences is what channeled my interest in medicine and research.

cardiology

In childhood, I learned of my grandfathers’ premature deaths from cardiovascular disease. Their deaths were not necessary, but without access to basic medical care, their lives depended on non-evidence-based therapies. Their deaths inspired my mission to mitigate the burden of heart disease and provide access to care for those who need it most—like my grandfathers.
After ten years of volunteering in cardiology departments across the country, I have seen too many families like mine torn apart by heart disease, which made me aware of the pervasive disparities that persist in cardiovascular health. I made early detection and prevention of heart disease my life’s mission.
To address this unfortunate reality, I've engaged in a multifaceted view of cardiology to recognize health disparities and empower patients about their health through organizing monthly patient support group meetings and public health campaigns with the National Institutes of Health All of Us Research, as well as leading our local Go Red for Women initiative. I have also sought to impact the healthcare system by spearheading my city’s first Structural Heart Clinic to provide early diagnosis of severe heart defects. Additionally, I have helped advance medical knowledge by presenting clinical vignettes and publishing peer-reviewed articles, while conducting the cardiovascular research.
All in all, I believe that my early involvement in cardiology has allowed me to gain clinical experiences, develop many practical clinical skills, but above all it reinforced that medicine, for me, is a personal calling influenced by my grandfathers, whose lives inspired my mission.
terry foundation scholar &
top ten senior
Two of my greatest accomplishments were being named a Terry Foundation Scholar and a Top Ten Senior at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). I received these awards by the Terry Foundation and the UTEP Alumni Association, respectively, on a combination of academic achievement, involvement, leadership, and service both in the community and on-campus, as well as the impression we have made on others within our community. I am grateful for and humbled by these honors. However, I am most thankful for receiving these recognitions because through each one of them my belief that young people can make a difference is strengthened. I count these accolades as proof that nothing is impossible where there is determination, passion and purpose. Through my interest in medicine and cardiology, I realized that if you want to help change the world, it doesn’t matter how old you are, where you’re from, or how much you know. It’s my goal to empower others to be interested in science and medicine, to want to make a difference by discovering new things, and most importantly, to give their time and talents to a cause they care deeply about. I strive to uphold and share this mantra through everything I do. As long as you allow your passion and vision to become a reality, the world will sit up and notice it.

model united nations
Currently, I serve as one of the delegates for the Model United Nations Environment Assembly. Through this role I have been advocating for the 17 SDGs — goals set and adopted by UN countries to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all. This role has given me the opportunity travel the world and speak at various youth and sustainability focused conferences. At these conferences, I have met and interacted with young people, learned about the problems their respective countries are facing and how they themselves are working towards solving these problems.
